DISTRICT:31ST FARMERS DAY CELEBRATION

A 43 year old mason, Mr. Joseph Boabeng has been
adjudged the best farmer at this year’s district farmers’ day celebration at Atobiase
in
the Western Region. Mr. Boabeng is an
all round farmer with 13 acres of cocoa, maize and livestock. He was followed by a 52 year old Madam Sophia
Takyi also an all round farmer with 10 acres of oil palm plantation, cassava
and livestock.
In an address, the DCE for Wassa East Hon. Anthony
Emmanuel Aggrey appealed to the youth and land owners to stop degrading the environment
especially suitable land for agriculture and water bodies.
He disclosed that the inland valley rice project at Dompim
No.1 in the district is among ten valleys to be reviewed in the Western Region,
adding that the farmers have been supplied free high yielding rice called AGRA
rice, fertilizers and four power tillers to help plough their rice fields.
Hon. Aggrey told
the farmers that through the assistance of the Deputy Minster of Roads and Highways
who is also a Member of Parliament for the area Hon. Isaac Adjei Mensah, all
cocoa roads in the district are under construction.
For his part, the District Agric Director Mr. Joseph
Ayiah recounted events which led to the institutionalization of the farmers’
day celebration in 1984, saying that farmers’ efforts in taking the country out
of the famine that engulfed the country in 1983 made it possible for the
government then to recognize farmers.
He admonished farmers to continue with the hard work
so that event that happened in 1983 never occurred again. In all about fifty
farmers were awarded. The best farmers received a 32” and 24” ‘LED TV, sewing
machines, machetes, wellington boots, hand pump machine, radio sets, clock,
bicycles among others. Other winners received machetes and certificates of
recognition.
