WASSA EAST DISTRICT:31ST FARMERS DAY CELEBRATION
hon. Anthony E. Aggrey (DCE) DSP Ohen-Djan
A 43 year old mason, Mr. Joseph Boabeng has been adjudged the best farmer at this year’s district farmers’ day celebration at Atobiase in the Western Region.  Mr. Boabeng is an all round farmer with 13 acres of cocoa, maize and livestock.  He was followed by a 52 year old Madam Sophia Takyi also an all round farmer with 10 acres of oil palm plantation, cassava and livestock.

In an address, the DCE for Wassa East Hon. Anthony Emmanuel Aggrey appealed to the youth and land owners to stop degrading the environment especially suitable land for agriculture and water bodies.
He disclosed that the inland valley rice project at Dompim No.1 in the district is among ten valleys to be reviewed in the Western Region, adding that the farmers have been supplied free high yielding rice called AGRA rice, fertilizers and four power tillers to help plough their rice fields.

Hon. Aggrey told the farmers that through the assistance of the Deputy Minster of Roads and Highways who is also a Member of Parliament for the area Hon. Isaac Adjei Mensah, all cocoa roads in the district are under construction.

For his part, the District Agric Director Mr. Joseph Ayiah recounted events which led to the institutionalization of the farmers’ day celebration in 1984, saying that farmers’ efforts in taking the country out of the famine that engulfed the country in 1983 made it possible for the government then to recognize farmers.

He admonished farmers to continue with the hard work so that event that happened in 1983 never occurred again. In all about fifty farmers were awarded. The best farmers received a 32” and 24” ‘LED TV, sewing machines, machetes, wellington boots, hand pump machine, radio sets, clock, bicycles among others. Other winners received machetes and certificates of recognition.
