WASSA EAST DISTRICT:  WORLD MALARIA DAY OBSERVED AT SEKYERE KROBO


District Chief Executive for Wassa East District, Hon. Anthony Emmanuel Aggrey  

The District Chief Executive for Wassa East District, Honourable Anthony Emmanuel Aggrey, has blamed the high incidence of malaria in the country to human attitude and activity. He said we can not behave like ostrich and bury our heads in the sand, adding that the very day mankind behaves appropriately towards its environment and surroundings there will be no need to import malaria drugs.

Hon. Aggrey made the statement at this year’s World Malaria Day Celebration at Sekyere Krobo in the Western Region. It was sponsored by World Vision Ghana and Cocoa Life.

The DCE lamented about the recent city life attitude creeping into our communities, explaining that the attitude of poisoning our environment with our activities is now being witness in our communities, thus there is no communal labour, defecating indiscriminately and throwing rubbish anywhere among others.

He admonished the people to change their attitude and bring back the old days of communalism.

For her part the District Health Director for Wassa East, Mrs. Priscilla Amoah, said statistics available indicates that malaria incidence in the district are on the increase rather than decreasing in spite of the numerous education, saying that in 2010, 92.337 cases were recorded but the figure went up to 116,000 in 2013.

She said one of the objectives of the Ministry of Health is to have zero malaria or malaria free country but due to human attitude it’s becoming a mirage

However, Mrs. Amoah appealed to the people not to showcase the insecticide treated net (ITN) given to them by the Health directorate in their room but put them in use, in order to protect themselves from malaria.

Speaking under the theme “invest in the future, Defeat Malaria Now”, the National Coordinator Child Health Now Campaign, Mr.  Micah Ayo Olad said the focus of World Vision Ghana and the Ghana Health Service is to prevent and control the effects of malaria especially on pregnant woman and children under five years.

He further said World Vision recognizes and celebrates the effort of Government, through the Ministry of Health to improve maternal and child health. He added that the free maternal delivery system across the country and the establishment of more midwifery training schools are landmarks in the fight to end preventable deaths like diarrhea, malaria among others.

According to Mr. Ayo Olad World Vision aspires, to ensure that children enjoy good health and are care for, protected and participating in community life, adding that, World Vision has committed about 1.5 billion dollars globally to contribute to reducing preventable deaths among children under five years of age.

The occasion brought together both present and past Area Managers of World Vision Wassa East Programme.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Wassa East,  Hon. Isaac Adjei Mensah

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Wassa East, Hon. Isaac Adjei Mensah who also doubles as the Deputy Minister for Road and Highways have met and interacted with his constituents at Daboase in the Western Region.

The forum was used to brief the constituents on happenings in parliament, the country as well as the constituency.

According to the MP business in parliament house is progressing steadily. He further said the business of parliament is to make laws, approval of Government expenditure, vetting of presidents appointees as well as general supervisory role on the executive.

Hon Adjei Mensah said he has not renege on his role as a member of parliament for the constituency, thus making his voice heard on any issues of importance in the house.

On issues affecting the progress of the country, the MP said Government through the Minister of Energy is working around the clock to restore the current power fluctuation across the country. He added that Government understand and appreciate the effect of the energy        crises, saying that most economies of the world largely depend on energy.

The Deputy Minister said since taking the reins of power in January 2013, Government continue to extend electricity to rural areas, under the rural electrification project. Also roads in the Western Region continue to see a facelift, stressing that most roads in the country are under construction, adding that some are completed whiles some are about 60 percent complete.

Addressing development issues in the district, the MP outlined a number of projects about to be rolled out in the district. This he said include, Government plan to put up a Nursing training collage in the district. Again the district is to benefit from the Government programme of building 200 Community Senior High Schools (CSHS) across the country and also upgrading the Daboase Senior High and Technical School (DSHTS).

Hon. Adjei Mensah disclosed that the road from Daboase to Ateiku has been awarded to a Chinese company to construct, adding that from Ateiku to Twifo Praso would be done in faces. These roads when completed according to the MP would open up the district for development since most vehicles traveling to Kumasi from the Western Region and that from the Ashanti Region would use Daboase Ateiku road.

In a related development, the Member of Parliament for Wassa East Isaac Adjei Mensah has admonished chiefs and land owners of the district to release land for development projects, saying that it is one of the surest way of developing and improving lives in the district.

He also urged the youth to channel their energies into productive use, educating themselves to take advantage of job opportunities in the district rather than going on demonstration to drum home their concerns to people in authority. In conclusion, he thanked everyone for making the programme successfully; especial the chiefs and elders.

WASSA EAST DISTRICT: CHEMICAL SELLERS RECEIVES TRAINING


WASSA EAST DISTRICT:  CHEMICAL SELLERS RECEIVES TRAINING

The Wassa East District Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service has organized a day’s training workshop for chemical sellers at Daboase in the Western Region.

About 30 chemical sellers in the district attended the workshop. They were taken through the basic principles of dispensing drugs, checking of manufacturing and expiring date of drugs before purchasing them. There were also demonstrations of the best way of using both the male and female condoms.

 Addressing participants, Mrs. Dorcas Sackey acknowledge the need for chemical sellers to be given periodic training since the district can not boast of pharmaceutical to shops.

She charged participants not to take for granted the knowledge acquired through the workshop and give their respective communities the best form of services that they deserve.

Explaining the reasons behind the demonstration of the wearing of both female and male condoms, Mrs. Sackey said due to ignorance most people get infected with sexually transmitted diseases in spite of using protection during sex.

Timothy Kofi Wayo and Emmanuel Gyema chemical sellers at Jerusalem and Daboase, expressed gratitude to the Heath Directorate and the assembly for the training. They appealed for the exercise to be made periodically to keep them always updated to current trends.
