Some 17 farmers were presented with awards at the 29th Wassa East District Farmer’s Celebration Sekyere Heman.
Mr Bukari Adam, a 45-year-old farmer at Daboase, was adjudged the district’s overall best farmer.
His prize consisted of one spraying machine, one sewing machine, one rice cooker, six pieces of cutlasses, two pair of wellington boots, certificate, bicycle, bread toaster and a radio set.
Other winners were Madam Abena Adaboa of Sekyere Heman, best physically challenged farmer, Madam Margaret Apedum of Edwinase, best woman farmer, Mr Kobina Kwakye of Abukrom, best cowpea farmer and Mr Philip Dugar of Daboase, best poultry farmer.
They were presented with certificates, T-shirts, sound systems, wellington boots and other items.
In a speech, Hon. Isaac A. Mensah, Member of Parliament for the area and the Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, expressed concern that majority of farmers in the area were not indigenes.
He urged the youth to go into farming and cultivate cash crops in addition to food crops such as plantain and cassava which farmers in the area were concentrating on.
Mr. Mensah appealed to traditional authorities to release lands to young people who were interested in farming to enable them support the government’s agricultural programme.
Hon. Anthony Aggrey, the District Chief Executive, also advised the youth to take up farming instead of galamsey, which degraded the environment.
He said the District Assembly will continue to support the processing of agricultural products through its Rural Enterprises Project and in collaboration with partners including World Vision International.

Mr. Aggrey proposed the formation of Farmer Based Organizations and the building of capacity of farmers and agricultural officers to check post-harvest losses.

WASSA EAST DISTRICT: “GHANA BELONGS TO ALL OF US” SAYS DCE

District Chief Executive for Wassa East, Hon. Anthony E. Aggrey

The District Chief Executive for Wassa East, Hon. Anthony Emmanuel Aggrey has said “Ghana is one nation that belongs to all of us and not any particular group of persons and therefore we need to work in unity to ensure that the better Ghana we all dream of is achieved. He made this statement at the 57th Independence Day celebration held at the St. Martin’s School Park at Daboase.

Speaking on the theme for this year’s celebration “building a better and prosperous Ghana through patriotism and national unity”, Hon. Aggrey said the theme is not only timely but very appropriate. He said if we cast our minds some few year back we would remember that Ghanaians showed a great deal of enthusiasm, exhibited unity of purpose and a sense of responsibility to this nation but in recent times however the situation is very different and Ghanaians are gradually departing from living for our nation.

He therefore entreated everyone of us to change our attitudes and participate actively in programmes and activities that would leave a lasting legacy like what we are celebrating today for posterity to also enjoy and cherish and by so doing our children would imbibe these qualities so that they grow up as the responsible adults that we would want to bequeath Wassa East District and mother Ghana to.

About eight schools both Primary and J.H.S and one senior high participated in the march past. The schools were Sekeyere Aboaboso D/A, St. Martin’s Anglican, S.I.P.L, Kakokrom D/A, Dompim No.1, Daboase D/A, T.I Ahmadiyya, Krofofrom D/A and Daboase S.H.S,

The audience was treated with a colourful cultural display by pupils of S.I.P.L Primary. Best students who excelled in last year’s BECE were awarded with certificates and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Also the most improved schools were not left out. Prato No. 1 D/A J.H.S emerged the best. For the march past at the primary level these schools S.I.P.L, St. Martins Anglican and Kakokrom D/A emerged the first, second and third respectively. For the Junior High section St. Martins JHS came first, followed by S.I.P.L and Daboase D/A JHS.

The parade was commanded by the Daboase Senior High School cadet and it was a spectacular performance they put up that day.

On the whole the event was very colourful and successful.
