Some 17 farmers were presented with awards at the 29th Wassa East District Farmer’s Celebration Sekyere Heman.
Mr Bukari Adam, a 45-year-old farmer at Daboase, was adjudged the district’s overall best farmer.
His prize consisted of one spraying machine, one sewing machine, one rice cooker, six pieces of cutlasses, two pair of wellington boots, certificate, bicycle, bread toaster and a radio set.
Other winners were Madam Abena Adaboa of Sekyere Heman, best physically challenged farmer, Madam Margaret Apedum of Edwinase, best woman farmer, Mr Kobina Kwakye of Abukrom, best cowpea farmer and Mr Philip Dugar of Daboase, best poultry farmer.
They were presented with certificates, T-shirts, sound systems, wellington boots and other items.
In a speech, Hon. Isaac A. Mensah, Member of Parliament for the area and the Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, expressed concern that majority of farmers in the area were not indigenes.
He urged the youth to go into farming and cultivate cash crops in addition to food crops such as plantain and cassava which farmers in the area were concentrating on.
Mr. Mensah appealed to traditional authorities to release lands to young people who were interested in farming to enable them support the government’s agricultural programme.
Hon. Anthony Aggrey, the District Chief Executive, also advised the youth to take up farming instead of galamsey, which degraded the environment.
He said the District Assembly will continue to support the processing of agricultural products through its Rural Enterprises Project and in collaboration with partners including World Vision International.

Mr. Aggrey proposed the formation of Farmer Based Organizations and the building of capacity of farmers and agricultural officers to check post-harvest losses.
